Castle of Platamon

The Castle of Platamon is one of the most beautiful and well preserved castles in Greece. It is located at the south-east foot of Olympus, on a hill over the sea, a position that controls the shortest road which connects, since the ancient times, Macedonia to Thessaly. The castle is built on the site of ancient Heraclea (or Heraclion). It was built by Lombard crusaders in 1204 and served to control the passage from Macedonia to Thessaly. After its conquest by the Byzantines it was conquered by the Turks on the 14th century. In1770 it was conquered briefly by the Greeks, as well as in 1825 and in 1878.

The Castle of Platamon, is currently operating under the responsibility of the 9th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities and with its consent some of the events of the Olympus Festival are held there.
